As humanity prepares to return to the Moon and eventually establish a permanent presence beyond Earth, one challenge remains largely unsolved. Every long-duration mission still depends on a fragile logistics chain from Earth to provide something as essential as food. The farther we travel, the more expensive, risky, and impractical that dependency becomes.
That question marked the beginning of a research journey in 2023 focused on autonomous food production for space. What started as a scientific investigation into controlled-environment agriculture and life support systems gradually revealed a much larger opportunity. The challenge was never just about growing lettuce in space—it was about enabling human permanence beyond Earth.
As our research progressed, one realization became increasingly clear: food production is only one component of a much broader life support ecosystem. To truly enable long-duration missions, humanity will need intelligent systems capable of operating autonomously in environments where resources are limited, maintenance opportunities are rare, and reliability is critical.
That realization transformed a research project into a company.
Today, LIFE is a Brazilian deep-tech company developing autonomous life support systems for extreme environments on Earth and beyond. We combine controlled-environment agriculture, advanced automation, and data intelligence to build technologies that reduce dependence on constant resupply and increase the autonomy of long-duration missions.
We believe that the technologies required to keep humans alive on the Moon, Mars, and future space stations will also transform how we produce food in some of the most resource-constrained environments on Earth. Space forces us to engineer systems that are efficient, resilient, and autonomous—and those same technologies have the potential to improve agriculture wherever resources are scarce.
Today, LIFE has evolved from an early-stage research initiative into a company recognized by the Brazilian Space Agency (AEB), supported by the Behring Foundation, and selected to represent Brazil in the Brazil–Europe Space Economy Mission. These milestones validate not only our technology, but also the growing importance of autonomous life support systems for the future of space exploration.
The next era of exploration will not be defined solely by more powerful rockets or larger spacecraft. It will be defined by the infrastructure that allows people to live, work, and thrive far from Earth.
